Virginia Beach is a resort town in the true sense of the word. Visit this wonderful location which boasts a humid subtropical climate, miles of unspoiled beaches, hundreds of hotels and guest lodges, a number of national parks, and many sightseeing opportunities for visitors and family groups of holidaymakers. A further bonus for those nervous travelers out there- Virginia Beach is situated to the north of the usual track followed by tropical hurricanes and storms.
A brief History of the City
The Chespians were the original inhabitants of the Virginia Beach area, though little is really known about them. By 1607 Captain Newport’s three ships arrived on the coastline in the New World. These English Colonists worked for the Virginia Company of London, from which the town’s name is derived. They moved further inland to prevent competition from other colonizing countries.
After 1888, with the provision of rail transport and the beginnings of electricity supplies, hotels began to open in Virginia Beach, then situated in Princess Anne County. By 1922 with the Virginia Beach Boulevard reaching completion, the way was open for visitors to use road transport to vacation in the area.
Should the summer rainfall send you scurrying off the beach do not despair! There are many wonderful sights to see both in and close to Virginia Beach, such as the Tugboat Museum in Norfolk which is housed in a restored 1933 tug boat. You could also visit the ‘Nauticus Museum’ which houses science and technology exhibits.
The Atlantic Wildfowl Museum near Virginia beach can be found in the historic de Witt cottage. The Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Centre are well worth visiting. When the weather clears, you could register for scuba diving courses here.
If it is seaside adventure you are after, you can charter a yacht and take to the waters of the Atlantic Ocean and dine in style like the rich and famous. Alternatively, you could go deep sea fishing on a chartered Waterman fishing cruise.
Virginia Beach offers fine golf courses and a lovely Jungle Golf mini-golf course. Visitors should not miss the well-known “Trashmore” Park, a games and entertainment centre created on a mountain made from a landfill covered over with arable soil.
Nature lovers should visit the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge to see fresh water marshes, and protected wildfowl species which spend their winters in this place of safety run by the US Fish and Wildlife Service.
With so many sights to see we do hope you will have time to pamper yourself at a Spa, and test the large variety of cuisines available on the Boardwalk.
